Applicant Eligibility & Documents Required

I. Language Programs

1. SWU Chinese Language Learning Programs (for Self-financed Students)  

(1) Applicant Eligibility

►Non-Chinese citizen in good health

►16 years old and above, with valid foreign passport

(2) Documents Required

►Application Form to Southwest University (in duplicate, including one photocopy)

►Photocopy of highest education certificate

►Copy of passport

►Two photocopies of Physical Examination Record for Foreigner (Applicants keep the original form for study visa application.)


II. Non-degree Programs

1. SWU Programs for Self-financed Senior Visiting Scholars

(1) Applicant Eligibility

►Non-Chinese citizen in good health over 18.

►Master’s degree holders.

►HSK 4 certificate with the score of or above 180.

Note: Applicants who fail to meet the requirement about Chinese proficiency should take one year Chinese course before the visiting program begins.

(2) Documents Required

►Application Form to Southwest University (in duplicate, including one photocopy).

►Photocopies of master’s degree diploma and transcript. Such documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized copies in Chinese or English (in duplicate, including one photocopy).

►Photocopy of HSK certificate or other certificates of Chinese proficiency.

►Two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors with their signatures.

►Study and research plan in English or Chinese (not less than 800 words).

►CD of works. Applicants for music studies are requested to submit a CD of their own works; applicants for fine arts are requested to submit a CD of their own works (including two sketches, two color paintings and two other works).

►Published academic papers or other academic achievements (original or photocopy, if any).

►Two recent photos (white background, in passport size). Please write down the applicant’s name and major at the back of the photo.

►Photocopy of the applicant’s passport.

►Two photocopies of Physical Examination Record for Foreigner (Applicants keep the original form for study visa application).

2. SWU Programs for Self-financed General Visiting Scholars

(1) Applicant Eligibility

►Non-Chinese citizen in good health over 18.

►Bachelor’s degree holders or undergraduates.

►HSK 4 with the score of or above 180.

Note: Applicants who fail to meet the requirement about Chinese proficiency should take one year Chinese course before the visiting program begins.

(2) Documents Required

►Application Form to Southwest University (in duplicate, including one photocopy).

►Photocopies of bachelor’s degree diploma and transcript or undergraduate academic transcript. Such documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized copies in Chinese or English (in duplicate, including one photocopy).

►Photocopy of HSK certificate or other certificates of Chinese proficiency.

►Two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors with their signatures.

►Study and research plan in English or Chinese (not less than 800 words).

(1) Applicant Eligibility for Chinese-taught Programs

►Non-Chinese citizen in good health

►High school graduate or above with valid foreign passport below the age of 35

►HSK 4 certificate with the score of or above 180

Note: Applicants who fail to meet the requirement about Chinese proficiency should take one year Chinese course before bachelor's degree studies.

(2) Applicant Eligibility for English-taught Programs

►Non-Chinese citizen in good health

►High school graduate or above with valid foreign passport below the age of 35

►For Non-English speakers: IELTS: Not less than 6.0, or TOEFL (Internet-based): Not less than 80

►High school graduate with GPA not less than 3.0.

(3) Documents Required for Chinese-taught Programs

►Application Form to Southwest University (in duplicate, including one photocopy)

►Photocopies of high school diploma and transcript. Such documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized copies in Chinese or English.

►Photocopy of HSK certificate or other Chinese proficiency proof

►CD of Works. Applicants for music need to submit a CD of the applicant’s own works; applicants for fine arts students need to submit a CD of the applicant’s own works, including two sketches, two color paintings and two other works;

►Two recent photos (white background, in passport size). Please write down the applicant’s name and major at the back of the photo

►HSK 4 certificate with the score of or above 180

Note: Applicants who fail to meet the requirement about Chinese proficiency should take one year Chinese course before doctoral degree studies.

(2) Applicant Eligibility for English-taught Programs

►Non-Chinese citizen in good health

►Master’s degree holder with valid foreign passport below the age of 50

►For non-English speakers: IELTS not less than 6.5, or TOEFL (Internet-based) not less than 85

►GPA of master degree study not less than 3

(3) Documents Required for Chinese-taught Programs

►Application Form to Southwest University (in duplicate, including one photocopy)

►Photocopies of master’s degree diploma and transcript. Such documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized copies in Chinese or English.

►Photocopy of HSK certificate or other certificates of Chinese proficiency
